These two pages sum up what Wretched Bastards, an #OSR dark-fantasy game where players take the role of anti-heroes, is all about. Be violent, be lewd, be angry, be proud, be ravenous, be self-centred, be transgressive, #BeWretched!
Years ago a group of lewd and rowdy adventurers, collectively known as The Seven Bastards, was expelled from the village of Fork for their belligerent and salacious ways. But when consecutive bands of orcs start coming down from the mountains south of the village, leaving a trail of destruction in their wake, the locals find no support in their lord, Windom, the Earl of Andril, too distracted with the mysterious disappearance of his young daughter to care about any other trouble. The villagers turn to the only ones who can help them in a time of need, the Bastards.
Yesterday I got an e-mail from Patreon informing me my account was suspended for not complying with their guidelines. It wasn’t just software being overzealous, a human worker from the Orwellian-named “Trust & Safety Team” revised a post that got my Patreon account suspended for “glorifying sexual violence”. I’m glad that Patreon’s Thoughpolice is working for the safety of all the woke grifters using that platform (Anita Sarkeesian & friends come to mind).
By the way, the post that offended their sensibilities was the following:
“Wretched Bastards
Wretched Bastards is a low-magic, dark fantasy role-playing game. Besides being deadly and bleak, it is meant to be sleazy. The main characters aren’t heroes at all; they are greedy, violent, lecherous, cruel, untrustworthy scoundrels. They will lie, backstab, betray, double-cross, kill, pillage and rape through this grim fantasy world. They aren’t heroes, because there are no heroes in the kingdom of Riget, only a handful in the Kharabas continent, and not a whole lot more in the world of Antillia; however, they aren’t the villains either: the malefactors here are the filthy orcs, who keep coming down from the mountains, located south from the village of Fork, trespassing into human territory.”
You’ve noticed the Wrongspeech there? Maybe not, it was just a single word: rape. You can’t write rape on Patreon. Well, maybe you can, their Trust & Safety employee read the post after all! I suppose if a male trans threatened to rape JK Rowling with his shedick, he wouldn’t get cancelled for Wrongspeech…
Luckily (or not) I had just a couple of subscribers and was getting about 12 dollars a month. This allows me to just close my account and say fuck you very much to Patreon without any regrets. If you are considering opening a Patreon account my advice is: DON’T!
– The Wretched rules are OSR, mostly compatible with Lamentations of the Flame Princess and many other games. You don’t need them, but if you want to pick some ideas from there (they were adapted for playing anti-heroes) they were also released on Drivethru:
– Every release will be released in pdf and print-on-demand (as long as they are sizeable enough for print)
– The Seven Bastards will be the next release. It was the scenario that started this and it will probably be one of the largest adventures in the line. But we’ll publish it without rules (the initial plan was to attach the rules to this one).
– After releasing seven scenarios (our lucky bastard number) we’ll release an anthology. Or two, most likely: one d20 and the other 2d6 OGL. The anthology will feature original art by David and Melissa Guyll.
Daughters of Darkness, the introductory scenario for the Wretched Bastards world, is set in the idyllic countryside landscapes of the Var Valley, one of the most fertile lands in Antillia. Not anymore, though: there’s a mysterious plague rotting the crops. Ultimately the rot will get to the souls of the locals, unless a bunch of Bastards can stop the blight. Of course, they might as well decide just to raise some hell… [Wretched Bastards is an OSR game where players get to play despicable anti-heroes for a change]
World of Bastards: Daughters of Darkness is an introductory one-shot scenario to Silvia Clemente’s Wretched Bastards setting. It will be available on DrivethruRPG next week, but it’s available for Red Room’s Patreons right now.
