Wretched Folklore by Matthew Thomas, released today on Drivethru and Big Geek Emporium (it will be available later at Lulu.com a well)
On its face, Wretched Folklore it is a bestiary of creatures inspired by both Native American and European folklore to use in your Wretched Country and Wretched Époque campaigns. As games written with the OSR in mind—or, more aptly, written with the OSR game design philosophy as a guide—the Red Room’s offerings can fit into just about any game system with very little tweaking. This supplement, Wretched Folklore, is no different. You will find monsters that are, hopefully, unique and not your standard critter found in a monster manual of the world’s most popular role-playing game. Perhaps one of these monsters will make a fitting substitute for a creature found in a module of your own.
Welcome to the nightmarish realms of the Wretchedverse, where horrors lurk around every corner, and the darkness hides untold terrors. Wretched Darkness is a mature horror role-playing game where players take on the roles of anti-hero characters who must face the unknown and confront the supernatural and the paranormal head-on. Wretched Darkness may be played as a dark fantasy game, or you can make it into an actual horror experience. Players can choose from several factions for their characters, some already featured in previous Wretched games, such as the Knights of Cydonnia, BurroughsTech, the Araknyd Brotherhood and the Daughters of Ksenia, and a few new ones, like the Warden Foundation and the Children of the Night.
By default, the game is set in modern times, in urban environments, where danger lurks at every turn and death is never far away. However, you can use it to play horror games in different timelines. Combine it with Wretched Époque or Wretched Country for a 19th-century terrifying experience, pair it up with Wretched New Flesh – Postcards from Avalidad for a near-future surrealistic horror campaign, jump into the far future by using Wretched Space, or set it in any other age. This book presents you with a sandbox-style setting inspired by the works of masters of horror, such as Clive Barker, David Cronenberg, David Lynch, John Carpenter, George Romero, Wes Craven, Dario Argento, Tobe Hooper, Lucio Fulci and Mario Bava, but expect sources of inspiration as varied as William Burroughs, Charles Bukowski, William Gibson, Paul Auster, exploitation movies and Leonard Cohen’s poetry.
As a Game Master, you will find here tools and game mastering hints for running any style of horror game, such as Giallo, gore, supernatural, psychological, apocalyptic, surreal, sci-fi horror and more. Wretched Darkness uses a revised version of the Wretched mechanics, an old-school set of rules designed for playing characters that are not necessarily good or virtuous. The revised rules are still entirely compatible with previous versions. Still, they include new mechanics for sanity and the use of magic, as well as several new classes and playable races, such as Incubus/ Succubus, Loup-Garou, and the Wampyr. Player characters are also more vulnerable than they were in previous Wretched games: The Hit Point increase was downgraded (now, by default, you don’t roll for Hit Points when you level up, you only get 1 additional point per level), and the level cap is set at 10.
EPIC! a Wretched Cha’ alt adventure by Sílvia Clemente will be The Room’s entry to the Cha’alt Game Jam between, taking place January 1st and February 14th. During that time, gamers will have an open license window to create stuff related to Venger Satanis’ Cha’alt intellectual property (extending that to include Crimson Dragon Slayer, Alpha Blue and Encounter Critical (both the original and new edition). You can find more information about it in Venger’s blog.
EPIC!, being written by Sílvia for the Cha’alt Game Jam, will be the first episode for Wretched Cha’alt, a series of adventures mixing the two universes. The scenario will take place mainly in Theta Blue, a space station inspired by Alpha Blue.
In EPIC! the Cronos, an ancient power source, was awakened and disrupted by events taking place far away on the remote desert planet, Cha’alt. The Cronos will drag its Adityan Guards across the galaxy and into the path of a group of scoundrels forcibly recruited to police the ass of the Galaxy – also known as the Outer Rim – as part of the Wretched Legion. Neither Adityans nor Legionaries are prepared or interested in saving the galaxy, although the Cronos has seen signs they will. First and foremost, they must survive the dangers and treachery of Theta Blue, the most infamous space station in the system.
Author’s note: I was preparing our first adventure for Wretched Space when Venger Satanis announced a Cha’alt Game Jam; torturing my players with a Bastards Cha’alt crossover was already in my plans, so I decided to take the opportunity to make something more ambitious. EPIC! It will be the first in a series of adventures crossing Wretched and Cha’alt universes and takes place mainly in a space station built in the style of Alpha Blue; using both Alpha Blue and Wretched Space as source books will help you get more out of this adventure. Hi! First of all, merry Christmas! If you have purchased any of our core books, we have a gift for you: The revised rules for Wretched, which is also a Wretched Darkness quickstart. We’ve been working on the revised rules, introducing changes based on the natural evolution of the Wretchedverse (and buyer and reviewer suggestions) so they can be released with the next game, Wretched Darkness, the Wretched game of horror and dark urban fantasy.
While the setting for Darkness is still being edited, we have just finished the rules layout. These can be used with any of the other Wretchedverse games, and some modified mechanics should actually be used instead of the original. At least, that’s what we think… This time we’ve decided not to release a free quickstart (it’s about 220 pages) but to offer it just to those who have purchased at least one of the core books. Since these are rules for a horror game, some of the optional mechanics will not apply to all Wretched games (e.g. Hit Points were reduced quite a lot). Also, some of the illustrations were NFSW, but we’ve censored them.
So,if you have any of the Red Room’s core books, check your email, you should find there an email about an update.
