Wretched Dixie is a module sourcebook for the Wretched Role-Playing Game that follows the events of the American Civil War starting in the year 1860 and ending in the year 1865. Players will take on characters that are on the side of the Union, who wished for the United States of America to remain whole, or of the Confederacy, who wanted to continue the practice of slavery via states rights.

However, in true Wretched fashion, neither side was good or bad. The Union and Confederate armies raided towns and murdered many people, with the death toll of the overall war being an estimated 698,000. Whichever side you decide to make your character for is entirely up to you and the Game Master. Join the Union Army and fight to restore the nation back whole. Fight with the Confederacy to maintain your secession. Or split your table and have at it against each other on one of the many bloody battlefields.

Sorry, this wasn’t really it for me. I was somewhat excited by the concept of “keeping history alive” as the inner title page reads, but then the Dogmen and other cryptids cannonballed into an already rich wealth of historical source material. Mass combat being basically a couple of roll-offs was also not a particularly riveting game mechanic to me. This is probably someone else’s jam and has a neat concept, but this was not a particularly impressive first read of Wretched modules in my opinion.

I’m sorry you didn’t like it, but notice this was an entry to our first game jam (therefore it was made a free download). The concept may have been too ambitious for the word limits we set for the entries. Perhaps the author will expand on it in the future.

What a boring module. To start having a timeline of the Civil War is not really needed. What is given in the module is very surface level, so much so that a few mins on Google would give the same amount of context. Hell even doing a read through on Wikipedia would be better because at least then you get some context to the events. For a module that is “historical retelling of the American Civil War” feels like it was written by someone with an 8th grade understanding of the Civil war.
Next the whole “both sides” thing. Really odd stance to take that both sides were bad. There was an objectively worse to the two sides of the war, here’s a hint for the author it’s not the union.
Now to mechanics, the module only adds one mechanic and that’s roll offs for Mass combat. Really inventive stuff there. Fells like he has the best and brightest from WotC working on this. Honestly you could have just have used the Wretched system by itself instead of adding slop on top of it.
Lastly the adventures. Dogmen and John Wilkes Booth as a cult knight. Look to the author keep the writing out of chatgpt and if you did not use chatgpt maybe consider doing so. Trying to shoehorn in magical elements to the module is so out of left field.
All in all a lazy heap of slop added to a perfectly good system with all this historical depth of a kiddy pool and the writing talent of a toddler. If I could give this negative stars I would.
