Wretched Chanbara! is a fully-realized game setting built on the robust foundations of the Wretched system, complete with a succinct yet rich world history and a solid background that can be used for both short scenarios and extensive campaigns. The heart of Wretched Chanbara! lies in its deep immersion into the atmosphere of classic Japanese cinema, spanning from the 1950s to the late 1970s (418 pages).

The era of Wretched Chanbara!, immortalized by legendary directors like Akira Kurosawa and Kenji Misumi, ranges from the epic narratives of Seven Samurai to the violent, intense magnificence of the Baby Cart saga. While it often draws on the rich myths and traditions of Japan and China for inspiration, Wretched Chanbara! is not afraid to venture into uncharted territories, introducing entirely novel elements to its world through a seamless integration of magic and dark fantasy elements.

This fusion creates a blend of historical authenticity with fantastical creativity, offering players a captivating role-playing experience. Whether you’re duelling under a blood-red sunset or uncovering ancient, mystical secrets, Wretched Chanbara! promises an adventure steeped in the cinematic grandeur and dark allure of an era that redefined the art of film-making. It is neither a historical role-playing game, nor a pale copy of Bushido or The Legend of the 5 Rings. Wretched Chanbara! offers you a much darker game setting: out of eight kami governing the destiny of humans, five are aligned with evil, one is fundamentally good, and two are considered neutral.

Description

Wretched RPG is a free, OSR-compatible core system that brings an emphasis on gritty, anti-heroic adventures inspired by cult movie genres. Designed to be played with its own simple rules or adapted to any d20-based system, Wretched settings like Wretched Bastards, Wretched Darkness, and Wretched Country offer dark fantasy, urban horror, and spaghetti western experiences. Other settings, like Wretched Époque, take you into the grim streets of 19th-century Paris, while Wretched New Flesh plunges players into a dystopian cyberpunk future. For space-faring horror and action, Wretched Space and Orbital Decay provide high-stakes sci-fi drama, while Wretched Apocalypse explores post-apocalyptic survival. From the superhero grit of Wretched Vigilantes to the supernatural mysteries of Wretched Interbellum, each game offers a unique world, rich with dark intrigue and moral ambiguity. The game prioritizes fast, easy-to-run settings that are perfect for one-shots at conventions, game stores, or your home table. With a focus on the morally ambiguous and a nod to 1970s and 1980s cinema and low-budget charm, Wretched invites players to embrace its “Spaghettipunk” style for short but unforgettable gaming sessions.

Wretched Chanbara is the perfect book for players and GMs who are interested in a cinematic version of feudal Japan. The book mentions the cinema of Akira Kurosawa, but this is also great for fans of anime like Ninja Scroll, Samurai Champloo, Inu Yasha or Hell’s Paradise. Oh, and also videogames like the Nioh series or Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice. As you can tell by the title, this setting book is based on the Wretched RPG system, which as a system is very similar to the most popular RPG in the US. The main thing Wretched Chanbara includes are setting detail, character types and setting appropriate magic, gods and monsters. With a small amount of modification this setting book could be used with other OSR games. This book fills an important niche for people who are looking for an old school style RPG with a Feudal Japanese setting, and who want to send their ninjas, samurai and onimyoji against that setting and its natural and supernatural horrors.
